The Best and Worst of 2008 and What To Watch For in 2009

What a whirlwind this year has been. From the Olympics, to the economy, and Obama, we’ve seen quite a remarkable shift in all aspects of our lives over the past 366 days. As the year draws to an end, it’s time to look back on what we have seen in the past year. This article looks at where we’ve been in 2008 and what we expect in 2009.

2008 was influenced by many people and happenings. We even saw some highly anticipated online trends do a big belly flop into obscurity (Second Life anyone?). Here are a few of the trends that were hot and not so hot in 2008.

Hot Cold
Facebook MySpace
iPhone Flip Phones
Online Video Banner Ads
Obama-mania Sarah Palin
SaaS Open Source
Google everything Second Life
Touch Screens Blue Screens
"Green" Bottled Water

In 2009, be on the lookout for a significant shift towards all things free, open, easy, and effective. For those of us in the interactive marketing sector, this means a push for online marketing, social media marketing, and mobile marketing as its benefits become even more apparent when marketing budgets are limited and ROI is key.

Trends to watch for in 2009:

  • Cloud Computing
  • Micro-blogging
  • Netbooks
  • Voice Recognition
  • Local based marketing

As we leap into a new year, we should take careful note of the lessons we've learned in 2008. We've seen many new technologies continuously being brought to market that organizations can use to communicate more effectively with their audience. If social media, mobile capabilities, and our ever-connected society has taught us one thing this year, it was this: to go where your audience is and listen. Success will be achieved when we take those learned lessons and apply them to our respective businesses.

Have a safe and happy holidays from all of us at Boston Interactive.
